Writing Masterclass (Fiction)

UK writer Marina Lewycka, author of bestselling A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian has been teaching Creative Writing at NTU. Now she would like to share her insights with other aspiring writers in Singapore.

Recommended for:

· practising or aspiring writers of fiction

· anyone who has embarked on writing a novel and needs help to move it forwards

I am irritated by my own writing. I am like a violinist whose ear is true, but whose fingers refuse to reproduce precisely the sound he hears within.
– Gustave Flaubert

Many people have a great story to tell, but writing a novel is not easy. If you have already discovered this, this masterclass is for you!

How will you tell your story? Creating great characters and choosing the right narrative voice for writing your novel may be the most important decisions you make. In this masterclass, we’ll look at how to get started and how to carry your readers with you.

Students who have already started to write are invited to send Marina an outline and a sample (up to two pages of A4) that they are prepared to share with the group, in advance, to mlewycka@ntu.edu.sg, but this is not essential as there will be an opportunity during the day to write something to share.

*Note: The workshop runs for 3 hours with a half hour creative break in between.
